About the Organization (Anonymized*)
This manufacturing company oversees a growing portfolio of industrial and building-supply companies. With each new acquisition, leadership recognized the need for a scalable IT infrastructure that could support growth, improve security, and simplify operations across their portfolio.
The Challenge
Like many capital management firms, the parent company inherited fragmented IT environments with each acquisition.
Across the portfolio, which initially consisted of seven acquisitions, Macro encountered:
- Varied and disconnected collaboration platforms (Google Workspace, GoDaddy-managed Microsoft tenants, and standalone Microsoft 365 environments).
- Inconsistent security controls and little to no endpoint monitoring.
- Limited visibility into users, devices, and data across portfolio companies.
- Informal, reactive IT support models that created hidden risk.
In several of the newly acquired companies, IT was handled by a well-intentioned employee or contractor who responded to requests, but did not actively manage or secure the environment. For regulated financial services organizations, the lack of IT security controls, oversight, and consistency are huge red flags in an environment where risk mitigation and operational efficiency are critical.
The Solution
Macro designed and executed a repeatable IT integration strategy for portfolio companies that consolidated environments into a single Microsoft 365 tenant, while enhancing security.
1. Portfolio-wide IT standardization
Macro aligned each portfolio company to a unified Microsoft 365 platform, enabling seamless collaboration and enhanced security across the organization.
This included:
- Migrating users from Google Workspace, GoDaddy-federated tenants, and standalone Microsoft 365 environments
- Consolidating email, calendars, OneDrive, and SharePoint into one tenant
- Preserving data structures, permissions, and business workflows
- Executing migrations with minimal disruption to day-to-day operations
This approach eliminated silos and created a consistent collaboration experience across portfolio companies.
2. Centralized identity & device management
To reduce cybersecurity and operational risk, Macro implemented standardized identity and endpoint management across the portfolio:
- Entra ID (Azure AD) alignment for users and devices
- Microsoft Intune for centralized device management
- BitLocker encryption across managed endpoints
- Conditional access and baseline security policies
Every user and device now operates under the same security standards — a critical requirement for IT due diligence, cyber insurance regulations and post-acquisition integration.
3. Proactive monitoring & managed services
Macro replaced reactive, ad-hoc IT support with proactive monitoring and managed services, giving leadership confidence that issues would be identified and addressed before they impacted the business.
A lot of these companies had a ‘Joe’ — someone doing IT when asked, but not actively monitoring or securing the environment. That’s where risk builds. Our job is to implement proactive oversight and standards across the portfolio.
